Thanks to TV shows such as Sir David Attenborough’s Climate Change – The Facts, awareness of the environmental emergency and sustainability has never been higher.

There is no planet B. It’s now up to all of us to make our lives and businesses more sustainable.

We decided to start practising what we preach by achieving both ISO9001 and ISO14001 – an International Standard in Environmental Management.

As far as we know, we’re one of the only flooring companies to do so, so far, but we hope more will join us.

We’re delighted to see so many of our suppliers creating more environmentally friendly products. We particularly welcome the drive to remove harmful substances, such as volatile organic compounds and phthalates.

We particularly like to use Resin flooring because it’s non-toxic, but it has many other environmental benefits. We talk more about this in this month’s blog, along with sharing what we’re doing as a company to go greener.

Our three steps to going greener

Step 1. Reduce single-use plastic and recycle, recycle, recycle As you’ll see in the graph below, most of our waste is recycled with little of it going to landfill.

You’ll also notice that we’ve massively reduced our waste over the past year. This is thanks to our new packaging facilities, which means we can reuse our drum containers over and over again.

We’ve also started using larger containers which take up less space and help streamline our deliveries; saving on energy, fuel and wear.

Step 2. Reducing plastic in our oceans

Over 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year and by 2050 scientists estimate there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

The problem is only getting bigger and more complex to solve as more plastic continues to accumulate.

This is why we’re reducing our own plastic waste and why we’re a platinum sponsor of the Ocean Revival 2020 challenge, which is raising money to help tackle the problem.

The challenge will see the crew, including our contracts manager, Dom Rogers, row  3,700 miles from New York to London Bridge.

Step 3. Promote resin floors

You may not know it, but resin floors are more environmentally friendly than their counterparts.

While they may not smell nice when they’re installed, these products are non-toxic and very low in Volatile Organic Compounds.

(As a side note, you may also be pleased to hear that our expert extraction procedures and industrial fans mean the smell is extracted and disappears quickly!)

As resin is highly durable, these floors will outlast their competitors; cutting down on repairs and the need for frequent replacement. All of which reduces waste, energy and emissions.

Not only do they reflect more light, which helps save on energy and they’re easy to clean, which removes the need for harsh and harmful chemicals.

Some of the floors we install also contain recycled glass and mirror glass; including high-end floors such as the Mondeco systems.

All of which makes us huge resin fans.

In conclusion

Doing the right thing isn’t always easy but it is necessary, and you can’t underestimate what a big difference the small changes can make.

If you want to have a more positive impact on the environment, we hope you’ll join us in our drive to go greener.
